Suspicious package shuts down Murphy USA for more than two hours

Webb City police and fire departments blocked the entrances to Murphy USA Monday morning because of a suspicious package.

Police Chief Don Melton reports that the call came in at 9:14 a.m., and the Springfield fire department’s bomb squad was called.

Meanwhile, Melton says the gas station’s surveillance video was accessed. It showed the man placing the metal briefcase in the trash can, “and his actions seemed suspicious.”

A 49-year-old male subject from Joplin was identified and requested to return.

The bomb squad beat him to the scene, though, at 11:41 a.m. As they took over, they used X-ray to examine the briefcase and determined it to be harmless.
