The  third time wasn’t the charm in the Cardinals tennis district semifinal match Tuesday at Willard.

Webb City fell 5-3 to Willard in a match that could have gone either way. It was the third time the Cardinals faced the Wildcats in seven days.

“Willard beat us last week, but it could easily have gone our way then,” said coach Stephany Pace. “It came down to the last two matches tonight, and we just fell that much too short.”

Webb City advanced to the semifinals by defeating Hillcrest Monday in the quarterfinals.

Here’s a look at the results from each semifinal match:

DOUBLES

Alex Stanley & Lester Pascua lost 8-3 to Willard’s Kooper Shipman & Alijah Small

Easton McDonald & Cameron Stone won 9-8 in a 7-3 tiebreaker vs. Kaden Coatney & Morgan Bricker

Jayden Bowker & Justice Bonnow won 9-8 in a 10-8 tiebreaker vs. Knox Key & Hayden Colvett

SINGLES

Stanley lost to Shipman 6-0, 6-1

McDonald lost to Coatney 6-2 in both sets

Pascua defeated Key 7-5, 6-3

Bowker lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-4

“We peaked at the right time of the season, which is what you hope your kids will do,” Pace said. “Willard was just that much better than us tonight, but (assistant) coach Derryberry and I are proud of our kids. This has been an up- and down-season, but we wouldn’t trade our guys for the world.”

Webb City wrapped up their season with a 7-10 record. The team says goodbye to five seniors.
