John Purcell, one of the early settlers in the Purcell area, will be honored with a memorial stone dedication ceremony Saturday, July 6, at the Purcell Friends Cemetery.
His great-great-grandson and family will be traveling from Texas for the ceremony, which will start at 10:30 a.m.
It was actually John Purcell’s son, James Frederick Purcell, who had the city named after him when it was founded in 1903. Everyone is welcome to attend and meet the family.
John Purcell, born in 1818 in Hardin County, Ky., came to Jasper County to farm in 1843. The land he bought was mostly to the south of the Purcell Friends Cemetery, across Route D. His property included five acres that became known as the Purcell Farm Cemetery. That’s where Purcell was buried in 1884. His two wives were also buried there.
Emmanuel Baptist Church will host its 13th annual Let Freedom Ring event celebrating God and country at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 29, in Memorial Park.
Church members will be serving free hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, cookies, snow cones and popcorn.
Family-friendly fun will include inflatables, water fun and live music. There will also be a patriotic service with special recognition of veterans. Free ice cream and fireworks will conclude the event.
Pastor Kyle Beverlin says the event is Emmanuel Baptist’s gift to the community. He invites everyone to attend.
The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is coming to the Webb City Route 66 Events Center Monday for a blood drive.
Hours will be 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Appointments are encouraged and can be arranged online.
There are two incentives (while supplies last) for donors, a plush beach towel and a $10 gas gift card.
The Webb City Sentinel isn’t a newspaper – but it used to be, serving Webb City, Missouri, in print from 1879-2020. This “newspaper” seeks to carry on that tradition as a nonprofit corporation.
