Veterans attended a recent ceremony at Eugene Field Elementary School to present the contest winners’ framed Honor Art for Vets.

Honor Art for Vets

Many of you know about the amazing program Stars for our Troops, which creates new purpose for retired American flags.

Charlie 22 Outdoors has expanded it somewhat, says director Scotty Hettinger. “We were recently given retired American flags and wanted to create something truly special to honor them. To do that, we partnered with the fourth graders at Eugene Field Elementary School for an artwork challenge, inviting students to share their creativity and patriotism through art. This project is known as Honor Art for Vets.”

Art teacher Sydney Snyder made a voluntary assignment for her students to create original patriotic artwork.

The artwork was completed and passed on to veterans to judge, and now the winners are being announced:

  • Bo Taylor, first place
  • Rielynn Edwards, second place
  • Isaac Shurkey, third place

The framed awards will be on display at the school until the end of the year, at which the winners will be able to take them home. Frames were provided by WOW Printing in Webb City.

Their artwork will be featured alongside the stars from the retired flags, creating a meaningful tribute that blends creativity, respect, and love for our country. Artwork will also be included with stars in packages that Charlie 22 Outdoors presents to guests and mails across the country to other organizations.

100 Women Who Care donate to The Medical Loan Closet

Members of the local 100 Women Who Care presented their latest donation Wednesday to The Medical Loan Closet at 415 E. Seventh St.

The organization provides dignity, mobility, and independence to those who need it most by loaning medical equipment on a short- or long-term basis.

100 Women Who Care’s $4,900 donation will assist in purchasing a truck to transport large medical equipment.

100 Women Who Care is an international organization of women who gather four times a year for a one-hour meeting, learn about local charities and each donate a $100 check to a 501(c)3 charity that the group selects.

The Jasper/Newton chapter was formed in April 2018. Thus far, the chapter has given over $97,000 to local 501(c)3 charities. The next meeting will be at noon Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Joplin Public Library (in person as well as through Zoom). The three local charities that will present are: Aspire Scholarship, Community Clinic and CARS.
