Help requested to replace Carterville Cemetery flags

Each year for Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Carterville Cemetery Association volunteers proudly display approximately 100 American flags along the cemetery fence that faces Route 66 as a visible tribute to the men and women who have served our nation.

“It has become a meaningful tradition for our community,” says Mayor Alan Griffin, who also serves as vice president of the cemetery association.

Unfortunately, last year a severe storm with straight-line winds destroyed most of flags while they were on display.

“As a small nonprofit, we already face ongoing financial challenges, particularly with rising maintenance costs,” says Griffin. “Mowing alone now costs approximately $2,500 per service and is required about every two weeks during the growing season.”

This year is especially significant, because it’s the 100th anniversary of Route 66 and the 250th anniversary of the United States. In light of these milestones, we are respectfully requesting that your company consider donating all or a portion of the replacement flags so we may continue this important tradition of honor and remembrance.
