Shop Small this Saturday

Saturday, Nov. 26, is the day everyone’s encouraged to shop at small businesses.

Webb City merchants are among those promoting the event.

At Carthage, Chamber of Commerce board members were present Tuesday when Mayor Dan Rife signed a Carthage Small Business Saturday proclamation.

According to Julie Reams, Carthage Camber president, Small Business Saturday is an initiative that American Express formed in the midst of the 2010 recession, and the Saturday after Thanksgiving was chosen to encourage people to shop small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses.

In 2011, the federal government supported a resolution to support Small Business Saturday and all 50 states unanimously agreed to participate.

Space Force hoodies for sale to fund care packages

Order online or at the fire station by Dec. 1

The Webb City Fire Department is selling military hoodies to raise money to send care packages to service members.

This year, the department is supporting Space Force.

Orders can be placed online or in person at the fire station, which is at 506 S. Ellis St. The order deadline is Thursday, Dec. 1.

Free hands-on on-farm workshop Tuesday

Tuesday, Nov. 29 at the Lee Farm, Neosho

Professional and hobby farmers alike are invited to attend a free on-farm workshop from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Webb City Farmers Market’s Fruit Education Site on the Lykou Lee Farm,15392 Ibex Road, Neosho.

Patrick Byers, with University of Missouri Extension, and Angela Brattin, with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, will lead a hands-on discussion of winterizing irrigation, using row cover on high tunnel strawberry plantings, and putting blackberries to bed for the winter.

The workshop is part of a series of workshops at the site focused on growing blackberries, strawberries, and elderberries and is funded through a Missouri Department of Agriculture Specialty Crops Block Grant. The workshop will be conducted in English with Hmong translation available.

Electric bill going up $5 monthly for 1,000 kWh use

Fuel Adjustment Charge increase takes effect Dec. 1

Customers of The Empire District Electric Co. d/b/a Liberty Utilities will see a change in the fuel adjustment clause (FAC) charge on their electric bills effective Dec. 1.

For a residential customer using 1,000 kWh (1,000 kilowatt-hours) of electricity a month, the FAC will increase by approximately $5.01 a month, from $12.97 to $17.98.
